September 19, 2022 – Entry 1001: Let's Get Started

Hiker on a cliff's edge
Definitely not the author

Hey there!

Hello, and welcome to the startup guidebook! This is my first post on this website and I wanted to start off with an explanation of what I’m trying to do and how we got here.

How we got here

When the latest of the many startups I’ve worked for, founded, and/or counseled started to fall apart, I found myself underemployed and searching for productive ways to fill my newfound free time. I’ve noticed over the years that when things start to go sideways people naturally gravitate towards their comfort zone. I’ve always enjoyed reading and writing, and I found myself doing more of both earlier this year.

I was fortunate enough to pick up project work with various startups and small businesses and found myself working on some interesting issues. I was listening to a lot of podcasts to help pass the time, and (because I have no idea how to start a podcast) the idea of writing a blog about some of these projects slowly began to crystallize. I decided to try writing about something I was working on, and one afternoon I sat down and wrote the first draft of “Are NFTs Securities?”.

From there the idea began to grow and take on a life of its own. I began to envision a website dedicated to helping entrepreneurs and small business owners grow their businesses with articles, interviews, and other content. I still had plenty of free time, and a few months later - here we are.

The vision

I plan to write about issues that all startups face and provide some color based on my personal experience. As I come across interesting situations in my professional life, I’ll try relay what I find so interesting about the circumstances and examine the relevant developments and resolutions for lessons to be learned (with all respect for the privacy of all parties). The goal of all of this is to allow entrepreneurs and business owners to learn from the mistakes, successes, and failures of others in similar situations.

My goal is to grow beyond a simple blog, but I’ve learned that startups that get ahead of themselves and try to grow too quickly often burn out quickly after much exertion. I am going to start with posting once a week and we’ll see where it goes from there. I hope you’ll join me on this journey so we can find out where it ends together.

FFA,

Nick
